It’s been more than 65 years since Moss Kendrix became the first African American marketing specialist for Coca-Cola. In 1953 the face of advertising changed with Coca-Cola’s African American lifestyle ad in Ebony magazine. Then in 1971, Tom Burrell and Emmett McBain ushered in multicultural marketing as we know it. The ad agency now known as Burrell Communications Group continues to be a go-to powerhouse for brands wanting to tap the African American consumer market.
Despite buying power over $1 trillion, the conversation continues to establish African Americans as a viable market worthy of dedicated talent and ad spending.
